My Favorite Garden Tools–Dibble

The holidays are closing in and you may have gardeners on your gift-giving list. Over the next few days I’ll share some of my favorite tools that your gardening friends and family might find useful. Some of these tools are decades old and still function well.  I keep most of these special tools in a box just inside the garage door so I can grab and go to the garden.

I call it a dibble. Others refer to it as dibber or dibbler.

A dibble makes holes in the ground for planting seeds, seedlings and small bulbs. I used it this morning to transplant lettuce seedlings from small cells. It was easy to seat the little lettuce plants in the perfectly sized holes. I’ve also used it for planting garlic, squash seeds, ranunculus and other seedlings.

My dibble has a weight and heft in my hand. It easily slips into my loose garden soil. On Amazon or garden catalogs you’ll find metal and wood combos and silly plastic dibbles. I saw a beechwood dibble which had an antique feel. I envisioned a New England farmer in colonial days using his dibble to plant his crops.

Here’s what Wikipedia has to say about dibbles:
The dibber was first recorded in Roman times and has remained mostly unchanged since. In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, farmers would use long-handled dibbers of metal or wood to plant crops. One person would walk with a dibber making holes, and a second person would plant seeds in each hole and fill it in. It was not until the Renaissance that dibbers became a manufactured item, some made of iron for penetrating harder soils and clay.

I like my dibble. It was a gift from my husband. I like how it feels in my hand and the memories that come when I use it. There’s a similar one at Gardener’s Edge.

not to sound too millennial here but it annoys me so much when I’m at a restaurant and someone I’m with will complain about the service being slow like buddy pal it’s fine it’s not that important

You didn’t waited 40 minutes for a dinner before haven’t you?

i have but i also have, like, real problems

I waited well over an hour for food once at IHOP, because it kept coming out inedible.

We finally asked what was going on, and it turns out that the ONLY cook had been working for 36 hours straight with only a short nap.

I ordered the easiest thing to make, tipped the waitress heavily, and sent her back to the cook with a $10 tip for them, too, AFTER watching the 24-hour restaurant close the doors so that they could send the cook home for some rest.

Yeah, I’ve waited 40 minutes for my dinner, and I didn’t ask for a discount, we tipped VERY well, and sent the cook our best wishes.

If something goes wrong with your restaurant experience, consider that there are real people back there, working under god knows what conditions.

“Millennials” are more human than their previous generations imo

“You didn’t waited 40 minutes for a dinner before haven’t you?”

“i have but i also have, like, real problems”

This has such a baby boomer vs. millennial energy and i think about this exchange everyday

Funny how the generation that supposedly revolves around “instant gratification” understands that that’s never going to fucking happen… Huh, odd

I’d rather have tumblr with no adult content than tumblr full of child porn. Just saying.

And if anybody’s wondering, I won’t be using any tumblr alternatives and i will be staying right here. I certainly don’t agree with what tumblr is doing by banning stupid things like ‘female presenting nipples’ and removing people’s non sexual art and other content but still allowing fucking nazis, but as someone who is a csa survivor I certainly appreciate that tumblr is making an effort to eradicate child porn off the site. Like i said, I’ll take an adult content free tumblr over a tumblr full of pedo porn any day.

And just a thought I figured i may as well add here- the safety of children and eradication of child porn is always going to be far more important to me than if I can see titties on tumblr. Priorities! Safety of children should always come before the feelings of people who are upset cause they can’t see boobs.
